Searched and couldn't find a thread so here's this one.

Just heard yesterday that shooting for the Game of Thrones HBO series finished up yesterday. I am pumped for this show. Sean Bean as Eddard Stark will be awesome.

Game of thrones looks intriguing but i have never read any of the books in that series. How is it? what does it compare to?

It's a sloowwww read, but I am assured by people way into this stuff that it picks up by the end, and that the rest of the series is great. I'm about halfway through.

I'm not that into fantasy and am only reading it 'cause of the HBO thing. HUGE sci-fi fan though.

i'm 300 pages in to the game of thrones book, and it's fucking slow. is there any reason for me to keep reading if i don't like it already? i hate not finishing books but this hasn't intrigued me at all since i started, i just assume if i keep reading it'll get better but it still doesn't interest me at all.

Yeah, the first little bit is a sort of slow but I found that once I was about half way through the first book it picks up and the whole series keeps picking up and gets pretty awesome. I would say at least finish the first book and if you're still not into it then don't go for the second. If you're not into fantasy stuff and are expecting more magic and dragons and stuff then this series might not be the best place to start.

this is going to be epic. HBO usually does a great job.

and for people asking, Game of Thrones (and the series) is probably the best series I have read by far. I'll even say I like it better than Tolkien at this point.

The series is really "low fantasy" compared to most others, though it builds a little as the story progresses. The author is heavily influenced by medieval era historical fiction, I think it makes for way better books that focus on the story and not the typical fantasy elements.

Exactly. Best books. It doesn't "click" until about 3/4ths through the first one, but then you'll see what's up.

yeah, then shit starts getting real.

the crazy thing is rereading them after going through the first 4 and realizing how much important shit i missed in the first book. the dude has his writing together.

To be honest its not really worth it for me. I've looked in to it. I'm a pretty big DVD/Blu-Ray collector. I really don't like the idea of just getting a dvd in the mail and sending it back, or just watching something on my computer. Not my style. I know lots of people with netflix that love it, but its really not for me.

Any one have any good recommendations for Dystopian/Utopian books/shows? All I've read are 1984 and Do Andriods Dream and I'm reading Brave New World right now, I've always liked the genre but just never really knew what to get.

All ten seasons of SG-1 are great. I pretty much love everything stargate. Even SGU.

I really look forward to seeing the Hobbit. I hope it comes out just as good as the Lord of the Rings movies did.

Never watched farscape. I need to pick the DVD set. I've been eyeing it up for awhile. I'm going to have to get it soon.

Last I heard the Hobbit was getting back on track. Rumors were that Peter Jackson basically said "fuck it, I'll direct it". This is all just rumors though, it's never been officially canceled but its been pretty quiet.

just rented the animated hobbit. i told the clerk at the rental place that it was for homeschooling my 9 year old. i'm going to show her the entire sci-fi/fantasy section as history instead of the way more boring real life version they teach at school.
