Currently building up an Alien frame. I was riding a surly steamroller, but my roommate seems to think it's hers now.

I'm currently run a 48/17 gear ratio but I'm picking up a set of Sugino RD Messenger cranks and lowering to a 44/18. The hills in Portland are brutal with the ratio I'm running now. I'm just worried I'll spin out on down hills, I'm a sucker for speed so I'm torn.

It feels great on the flats and bombing down hills. I rarely spin out unless I mash down some pretty steep ones. The back end is a little harder to break lose for a skid but still totally doable and relatively easy. Track stands become a little harder, as well. Hills can be a pain in the ass, though. If you live in a hilly city I wouldn't recommend bumping up to a 48 tooth chain ring unless you want thighs made of wood.

I was about to interrogate you on how you manage to stop while running brakeless without cages. It can be done... but totally sucks.

Totally not true, I can get up some gnarly hills no problem and that's with a high gear ratio. I actually pass road bikes with derailleurs on a daily basis climbing hills, especially going down them.

it would come with a pump, helmet, lights, new pedals, 105 brakeset, and kryptonite lock (as pictured). that's 275+ in goodies.

Yeah, I skid clippless, too... just wouldn't want to. If I'm flying down a hill in heavy traffic without a front brake I need to be able to through a quick hop skid and wouldn't really be able to do that without clips.

I prefer fixed gears. Coasting will make you incredibly lazy. I would recommend getting a fixed and freewheel flip flop hub. You can get used to the bike when it's flipped to freewheel and when you're comfortable flip it over and ride fixed. Fixed, in my opinion, is a hundred times better.

Fixed, I switched over and won't go back.
You go everywhere faster because you HAVE TO.
You can't just pussyfoot coast through a ride.
Anyways, I'm currently riding an 1980something Peugeot fixed, with Vuleta Deep V Rims and shit.
Oh, and it has white bar tape now.

Cool for a reason, though. Things become trendy and stereotypically "hip" because their usually cool.

yeah like.. i thought they were the dumbest idea ever until i rode one and realized how fun it was and how much more there was to it than pedaling 3 times and coasting a mile and a half

Mountain Bike/Racing Bike on left
Around Town Bike
I also bought a Schwinn Varsity at the thrift store last month for 10 dollars. Nothing on it works right, so I'm considering turning into a single speed or something.
