Bass Gear Talk aka Post a list of your stupid obscure gear

General discussion, shows, and everything else.

Postby Jake D » Sun Sep 14, 2008 8:31 pm

I felt left out with the guitar gear talk thread. I know these have existed but whatever, let's get it going.

What are you playing through currently?

StingRay -> ProCo Rat or EHX Bass Blogger -> Sunn Coliseum -> Ampeg 8x10

I'm probably getting rid of the StingRay for an American Jazz this week though.

I got a Peavey T-40 I'm trying to sell as well if anyone is interested.

Talk to me B9!

I'm playing a 1980 Gibson G3 bass into a Gallien-Krueger 800RB head. I play an Ampeg 4x10 cab. And I was a rat pedal. Thats it. Hopefully if I get this job coming up I'll indulge on an Emperor 6x12 cab.

I also have an old Sunn Concert bass head with the black face that needs to be fixed. It catches on fire as soonas you turn it on. Not good.

As for my Coliseum, it's not mine. It's my wonderful friends, who I have told numerous times he can not have it back. I've also spent upwards of 350 to get it fixed. :smt010

My favorite head.

Kwame - buy it, $350.

:smt039 jake, same rig i've been using for 4 years since i have no reason or band to update it for:

fender american jazz into boss pedalboard (tuner, compression/sustain, bass overdrive x2, DD6 delay, bass synth that i never use) into hartke HA4000 head rackmounted w/alesis power strip into hartke vx410 & peavey 1x15. got a mexican jazz and an epip thunderbird on the side, neither see much use.

hopefully i'll have a reason to change up my gear soon

Jake - If you read the Guitar Gear Thread, you'd know they go for even less than that. So I sadly cannot pay that much for it, especially since I don't even need it.

I'm looking into a YBA-1 right now, and trying to find some nice, loud and large speakers.

I run a Fender American jazz ('98) through an Acoustic 150b or Ampeg SVT-CL through an Ampeg 8x10. It sounds great, but there are many times when I wish I had a 2x12 for more portability.

I'll try!

Anyone try any of the new Acoustic stuff yet? They have that 200 watt head out now, with the matching 4x10 and 1x15 - I know it's Chinese or whatever, but it's cheap as fuck and I've heard good things.

Also, by November they're releasing an 8x10 and a 600watt@2ohm(!!!!!) head... I might have to jump on that shit.

Fender Mexican Jazz Bass
Fender Mexican P-Bass
Ampeg 4x10
Ampeg B2
Boss ODB3

Looking to upgrade my head to an SVT-CL or Orange AD200/Mk3 one day. Also in the works to getting a 1x15 Emperor cab to add onto my Ampeg 4x10, maybe even just getting an Emperor 4x10 later on. I would also like to get my hands on a SansAmp.

I need more $$$$

Also - Shawn, I really like the Sting actually, but I have no pad on that old Sunn head so it clips like crazy, just too much going through that dinosaur. I love both of them, just not together. The Jazz I'm looking at I plugged in yesterday and without a set up or string change in over a year or 2 it sounds infinitely better.

Stingray rip-off (pretty decent)
Gallien-Kruger 1001-rb II
Genz Benx X2 Ext. 4x10 cab

within the next week, I will be replacing the cab with an Ampeg 4x10, and adding a Sans Amp DI pedal

looking at a new bass sometime in the future, Aerodyne Jazz is what I'm thinking. Anyone have any experience with these?

i don't miss my ray. but we like completely different tones. i loved the ray when i played softly and by myself, hated the way it sounded in the mix. but you are right, without the -15db pad, you are going to do that with most heads in that wattage area.

the jazz bass is honestly the most versatile bass out there. i love my p's but the jazz does more since it has two pups. if they made one how i want it, i would own one. don't feel like shelling out custom shop cash, or making my own.

Aerodyne's are solid. I use to play one. It was alright. Real light but the edges might make it uncomfortable when playing. I dont like the paint job of them though. Shows all your finger prints. I prefer the ones that are sold only in japan that have a pickguard. Like this one.

they're not bad. fender makes/has made way nicer p/j basses though. i'd dig around for like a 2000 hot rodded P, or if you like the jazz body the reggie hamilton signature looks pretty sweet.

my set up:
Fender Jazz (MIA, 2006)
Fender Precision (1978)
Peavey T-40 (MIA, 1984)

Mesa 400+
Ampeg 8x10

my ultimate goal would be to buy a lower wattage guitar or bass head (jcm800, ampeg v4 etc) to run really dirty through my other 8x10. my band also would need a bigger trailer. but for now this does just about everything i need it to.

musicman + 1001rb-II= :smt020 :smt020 :smt020 :smt020

using the -15db, i turn my master all the way up, boost a little more than half way, and use the woofer as the volume control....gets an awesome dirty tone. sounds a lot better through a good cab, but mine does the job, still gets loud as shit.

once i get a good cab ill honestly be set for awhile. gonna pick up a few pedals to mess around with, try new stuff.

1983 MIA Fender Precision (white pickups... I don't know why)
2007 MIM Fender Precision

SansAmp Bass Driver
Ampeg SVT350
Ampeg 1x15 / some no name 4x10 cab that I got for free

My MIM Pbass is the cheapest one Fender makes but it's so durable and sounds great, I've been using it all the time lately. Looking to get an Ampeg 8x10 eventually. Maybe upgrading to a different head, but need some suggestions... I have no idea

1973 rickenbacker 4001>ampeg b2>ampeg 8x10

hopefully im gonna get a sansamp di soon
wish i would have gone with a 4x10 or 6x10 for easier transportation...

the guy who sold me the rickenbacker sanded down the edges for playing comfort and painted it slime green with some skeletons and zombies and shit, ill post a pic some other time. its also got new schaller tuners, new bridge and a new bartolini pickup at the neck, the other is the original. its kinda a frankenstein bass but shes my baby :smt008:
