General discussion, shows, and everything else.

Looks like I'll be living here for at least the summer. I'll be working on Granville street. I've been on the west coast before, but only as far north as the Bay Area.
I may be asking for a miracle here, but is there any decent-ish areas where I could swing a 2 bedroom place with a ~$1800 budget?
Also, where's the best place to find out about shows?
Any general advice / cool shit to do, etc.. would be appreciated.

Sup dogg? I pay $850 all in for my own lil place, basically one big room I live in with a little kitchen and bathroom, its right on the edge of the city though, but it still only takes about 30 minutes to get downtown.
And yeah Black Lab and 333 are a couple of cool places, 333 just had drug church play. Music scene here is pretty weak though I gotta be honest.

thanks dawgs. Are there any areas I would outright avoid? And what would be a decent non-downtown place to look if I would be commuting to Granville St?

Also, I know that the descendents are doing two shows in Vancouver in August. At least there's that.

Anywhere along the skytrain is ok for an easy commute, but you might end up in a basement apartment . If ya wanna be around a busy strip try searching commercial dr, mt pleasant or kits ( if ya wanna be close to the ocean).

Yeah Kits is nice, affordable too for what it is and Commercial Drive is awesome. I'd also recommend Main Street but its more bus than train, but honestly this cities so small no where is really cut off.
Look on Craigslist to get an idea of prices, thats how 90% of people find accomodation.

sweet, thanks again. I have a car too and they're paying for my way out there, so I guess I won't really need to rely on public transportation, but it's good to know.
A girl in my graduate program is from Vancouver and had recommended Mt. Pleasant, too.

Car is a bonus for getting out hiking, hitting lakes etc, but if your working on granville (downtown side) your not gonna wanna bother unless they are paying for your parking. Craigslist has a lot of scams up, if the place is too good to be true, it is. The vacancy rate is low so its pretty cut throat out there.

Is there a Canada thread at all?
Anyway I'll be in Nanaimo, Vancouver and Kelowna for work in June. Thinking about driving back to Calgary thru the Interior. Is that a reasonable drive? Also-what are must stops along the way.

I live just outside of Kelowna. If you're driving through the interior there is a lot of hiking, lakes, and outdoorsy type stuff pretty much everywhere. Depending on time I'd suggest hitting up Okanagan & Kal Lake in Kelowna/Vernon. Kal Park in Vernon is good for hiking and cliff jumping. Stop in the Shuswap area, Salmon Arm is probably your best bet.
As you get closer to Calgary the obvious stops are Revelstoke and Banff, assuming you haven't already been there.

I was looking at a place near there. A friend from Vancouver said the skytrain around that area may be sketchy because of it being near east hastings?
Also, snagged a descendents ticket for 8/25

dont worry about what people say about east hastings, its pretty wild and crawling with drug addicts but it isn't dangerous

It's like 9:00am on a weekday in downtown Calgary circa 2014. Good luck

Strathcona park is close to Hastings , so just don't keep anything of value in your car. Nothing really to worry about.

Is there anywhere in Vancouver that's actually safe? I mean I've seen some wild shit happen on Granville, I have a friend who had a gun pulled on him while waiting at a bus stop in Kits, my cousin in East Van says she's had her car broken into lots, and Stanley Park is really dodgy at night.
Not saying Vancouver is this crime ridden city, but it's shitty how people just single out Hastings and Surrey because they're probably the two most economically deprived areas in the lower mainland.

Nah that'd be Winnipeg. They even shoot shitty B Movies there when they can't afford to actually shoot it in Chicago, and it's super dodgy.

I lived in Vancouver for 4 years with time split between east van and kits and never had issue. Most people I know have also never had anything happen to them beyond what you might experience anywhere. I would imagine your sample size is too small to draw a real conclusion.

Oh no my point is that it can happen anywhere, people shouldn't just single out certain neighbourhoods.

W 10th is a major bike route so you can take that across town in either direction and cover a lot of ground. also your a block off broadway so no matter where you are your close to anything you need. whats the cross st?

Close to all Beaches , Wreck beach is the best. The Eatery is a pretty cool sushi spot, tons of food all down Broadway.

Anyone here down to hangout? Any shows around that time?
Also, which record store should I checkout for Punk/HC/Metal stuff?

there's a facebook group called Vancouver Hardcore. lots of stuff happening in that scene these days, i dont go out much any more but i know its poppin off. I suggest tracking that down.
Working on Granville sounds like a nightmare. I dont go "downtown" unless i literally have to (and that's been like... 2-3 times in 2 years)

Where on Broadway are you?
Bon's at Nanaimo/Broadway is great for a $3 basic breakfast in a dingey diner atmosphere. Bandida's for vegan mexican food (my fav place, but usually busy. Right off Commercial)
