Everyone likes We're Down til We're Underground now, right?

General discussion, shows, and everything else.

For whatever reason I never liked Background Music, but since the 7"s aren't on spotify, I put it on for the first time in 10+ years and 1) I suddenly like it now and 2) I don't see why people who lost their shit over this didn't fuck with WDTWU. It seems like a pretty reasonable and believable follow up to Background Music. I know the back half is kinda out there but it still rules.

We’re Down is my absolute favorite. But there are some fucking riffffffs on BM. All in all, I can almost guarantee that if Wes sounded on BM like he sounds on We’re Down, BM would probably be my favorite. Not at all a fan of the latest album outside of like two songs.

Alot of people liked it when it came out. It is a good progression. I can't listen to them anymore and have zero respect for them as a band. But whateves.

Background Music is one of my favorite records ever. WDTWU is good, but for whatever reason never got me like BM.

Background Music is way better IMO, WDTWU corny. Background Music is already pretty corny, too.

There's a bit of revisionist history with AN these days. If you didn't like every millisecond of music this band put out between '99-03 you were looked at like you were a witch or something. They were borderline universally heralded in a time when fashioncore and garbage metalcore was taking over and before Bridge Nine and Rival(ry) really pushed melodic hardcore and brought that harder youth crew revival shit into focus.

WDTWU was a weird progression but it made sense. They couldn't have done Background Music Part 2 and if they had, I think they would have split even earlier than they did. Those dudes were beating those early songs into the ground with nearly unending touring cycles. I can't imagine going back into the studio and replicating that song formula, heading back out onto the road and playing nearly identical songs again.

I've personally never been a big fan of Alex's drumming. He's tight, fast and has a lot of quick and inventive fills, but I just never felt like it suited AN/GUTG. That's just one stupid picky drummers two cents. Plus Jarrod Alexander was my favorite drummer in hardcore for a long time, so I obsessed over every bit of the drum tracks off BM.

Ultimately, it's hard to compare the first two full lengths. As standalone albums, they're great. If you have to compare them, I think Background Music trumps WDTWU because it was so different lyrically, and it took such a hold on the "culture" (or whatever you want to call it) of hardcore at that time.

I’ve made Winds of Plague appreciation threads on this board. No shame in my game, bruh.

Maybe it’s one of those “I saw my dads dick when I was 3 and it was a foot long” situations, but Suicide Silence shows at the Showcase theater in 2004 are still some of the most violent shows I can remember going to.

Anyway, back to how you used to all swagger jack Wes.

Closest I came was owning a pair of Diesel jeans and wearing shirts that were too small. Luckily I had the body of a flagpole, so it didn't look as ridiculous as it could have.

Props to anybody in the early 00s who fought the temptation to wear form fitting t-shirts.
