Board Games lets discuss

General discussion, shows, and everything else.

Who all is into em. Make recommendations, specifically for two people ones. Got Risk, Settlers, and Carcassonne. Thinking about picking up Stratego since it's only $15 through amazon. There are a couple board games bars around here where you can check shit out but so many games have such steep learning curves. Whatchall fuck with?

My buddies and I always have fun playing this one: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/136063/forbidden-desert

Gameplay-wise it's pretty simple, but it's designed well so that no two games ever really feel the same and the difficulty scales with the number of players. It's replay factor is so high for us that we've just sat and played it over and over again some nights.

We also added a rule where we choose ridiculous characters and have to play in their voices. I know that's not everyone's cup of tea but it's fun to come up with some backstory as to why everyone is stranded.

Dude, same. And I remember whenever someone stepped on one of my bombs just obnoxiously yelling "BBBBBOOOOOMMMMBBBBB" for the reveal. Played it with another b9er last weekend and it was dope. They've even upgraded it where each rank has a special ability. The older version is the $15 one, I'm just gonna make notecards on what the new abilities do so I basically have both games.

They should probably just write that into the rules because literally every single kid I ever played with did this.

Loved Mancala.

I wanted to learn to play Go after reading a book by Yasunari Kawabata. Watched a video and I have no clue what's happening.

Also don't understand Backgammon

Has anyone played The Temple of Elemental Evil board game? I played the PC game when it came out in like 2000 or whenever and loved it but can't justify spending $60 on a board game if I don't know if I'll like it.

Another question: do any of you go to game shops and play? I've been thinking about doing this since I'm new here and don't have any friends but those places usually skeeve me out and the smell of a dozen unshowered Jeff Albertsons makes me not really want to.

Arkham horror is one of the best. Even if only one person understands the rules they can run a game easily for a group of people who don't know how to play, but they do need some familiarity with rpg games.

The entire premium board games scene has so many good games to choose from. Including lots of indie games that are top notch in quality. boardgamegeek.com has a really good rating system for top reviewed games. I have been addicted to space games like eclipse but you really need other people to play with who take them seriously

Been really into Agricola lately (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/31260/agricola). Has a bit of a learning curve, but it's the kind of game that is a good combination of random and strategy elements.

The Resistance and Codenames are both really fun party-style games.

Munchkin is a great party game, but for whatever reason it feels like when my group plays the games run way longer than they are supposed to.

Not a "board game" per se, but a great party game is Bang! The Dice Game. Fun deduction style game that pairs well with drinking and gambling.

Everyone mentioned a bunch of good ones already. I've been wanting to play Arkham horror forever. Here's some newer ones:

Grifters - card game where you build a deck of criminals, every turn you play either a single card or a specific group of cards to get larger bonuses. Fun with 3 or more people, it takes about an hour or two.

Welcome to the Dungeon - easy card game to learn, it's really fast to play one game, but you could play it several times. It feels like poker, you keep adding cards to the dungeon until you fold because you think it's too dangerous, last person not to fold has to fight through the dungeon.

Twilight Imperium - this fucking thing. It's so good, probably the best board game I've ever played. The box says a game goes 6-8 hours. I would say 8-10. This game goes deep, it took my friends and I some time to watch videos on gameplay and do like a 5 hour test run through to figure it out. You play an alien race looking for universal supremacy. You deal with everything; resources, trade, diplomacy, combat, etc. and everything effects everything else. Great game, it's hard to find 4 or more people willing to play a game for 10 hours.

This isn't a board game, but I cannot possibly recommend Quiplash enough. If you have a gaming system or an Apple TV, you can buy the Jackbox Party Pack (there's three of them, all like $20, all have Quiplash) and its played on the TV and on your phones.

It's basically Cards Against Humanity but the players decide all the answers.

So you'll get two prompts on your phone before a round. Let's say the prompts are "______ is an awful thing to give a 4-year-old for their birthday" and "When your friend isn't looking, you sprinkle ______ into their pasta" or something. One other person will have that same prompt, and then the prompt will go on the TV with both of your answers (unattributed), people vote on which is funnier, and then the person who made the answer is revealed.

If you've got a morally questionable group of friends, I promise, you will never have more fun playing any type of party game than this. It's absolutely incredible.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Patchwork yet.

I'd recommend the following games, specifically for two players:
- Patchwork (competitive)
- 7 Samurai (competitive)
- Karuba (competitive)
- Mansions of Madness - 2nd Edition (Cooperative)

If you're looking for games that are better for 3-5 players I'd go with:
- Scythe (Current favorite board game)
- Twilight Imperium (good, but long - also wait for 4th edition to come out later this year)
- Eclipse (like TI, but faster - some would say better)
- Terra Mystica
- Gloomhaven
- Potion Explosion

If you like deck building get Dominion. I hate deckbuilders, but people seem to like Dominion.

It is easily one of the best games I've ever played. The game looks/sound daunting, but it is actually really REALLY easy to pick up. If you prefer a tutorial, "Watch it Played" does a great video on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffMLIL5qGQg

Dank thread.

My friends and I had a period were we got really into board games so we were able to cycle through a few haha
Here's the ones I enjoyed:

-The Oregon Trail: Really fucking hard, however, somewhat more manageable if you have the hunting add on pack; I think we've only beaten this game once, and even then only one person survived so yeah haha
-Joking Hazard: Funny as fuck and perfect for an impromptu drinking game
-Betrayal At House on the Hill: Pretty interesting game and also fun as fuck when you're drinking; I'd recommend this especially for when you're playing with a group that has a few sweet ladies, only because of the intimate atmosphere it creates.
-One Night Ultimate Werewolf: Great game, but it's definitely better and more enjoyable when you have a full 10 player game going.
-Cash N Guns: May actually be my favorite out of this list; Had a great time drinking and playing this one too haha

Picked up Paths to Glory yesterday at the local comic book/hobby shop. I don't expect it'll be a game I play a lot just because it is so dense, and exclusively two-player.

I was pretty stoked regardless because the game is currently out of print and going for $150+ online, but the game shop had it listed at MSRP so I snagged it for $60.

Picking up a new copy of Clank! today from a dude on Craigslist for $35. I'm not a huge fan of deck builders, but this game may be okay.

Really looking forward to picking up the new The Thing and Planet of the Apes board games. I'm skeptical of movie based games, but they both look great.

Has anyone played Betrayal at House on the Hill? I see they have a version based on the greatest video game of all time (Baldur's Gate) coming out, so I'm very interested.

Are you talking about The Thing game Mondo is releasing? I checked it out first-hand at SDCC this year and it looks and plays incredibly. They had a few copies available to test, and while I didn't get to play, the games I watched looked awesome.

Betrayal is a great party game and has a huge level of replayability. The Baldur's Gate version is currently sitting at 7.6(ish) on BGG so I'd imagine it'll be a good game, but nothing mindblowing.
