ive been thinking lately about how he has been in a shit ton of my favorite movies and for a while had a nearly flawless movie streak even though he himself I don't think was ever the strongest part of any of those projects. Top Gun, The Firm, A Few Good Men, Interview with the Vampire, Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, Vanilla Sky, Minority Report, Collateral and his cameo of sorts in Tropic Thunder. It sucks that he only does blockbuster summer shit now because I really don't think he he was ever THAT good in a lot of those movies I just listed but showed a lot of potential in some of the weirder roles (Vampire, Magnolia, Thunder). I would love to peek into a bizarro timeline where he abandoned scientology around the time Vanilla Sky came out and dug deeper into weirder/indie projects

ERIC I want to respond to your long ass post because it interests me:

I have thought similar things about Tom, but more from the angle of "if and when" as opposed to why hasn't he. I think it would behoove him to do some small, complex, interesting movies. Lots of people would go see them and you know he'd like a shot at an Academy Award. I could see it happening and I would be for it because he's capable.

Every one of his Sci-FI movies are near perfect, including War of the Worlds. Anyone who disagrees is a troll. There's no way anyone can objectively say he's done a *bad* sci-fi movie.

I am honestly surprised he keeps landing these big summer blockbusters. I guess they do better than I realize because he keeps getting them while riding on the success of the MI movies presumably. Like, does he even get invited to shit like the oscars anymore or anything? I agree that he would make a pretty crazy career turnaround if he was to switch gears and I DO think he has an oscar performance inside him, but I also know he is 100% coddled 24/7 and is constantly told that he is the #1 actor in the world while everyone for the most part forgets he even exists besides the one month he has a movie out a year. It would be cool if one day he just snapped out of it and told scientology to fuck off and started making some crazy ass pictures and star in some intense HBO or FX show and just lead up to some insane Oscar winning performance

Only sci-fi he did I didn't like was Oblivion.

Open Your Eyes >>>>>> Vanilla Sky

Born of the Fourth of July is great. Magnolia and Eyes Wide Shut are my favorites. I guess The Outsiders counts too even though it was a small role.

I like Vanilla Sky and all, but the original is simply much better. Never been much of a Cameron Crowe fan, besides Almost Famous and that. Plus, Penelope Cruz is a better actress in her native language.

Knowing what we know now about Ped Zepplin I think the character of Penny Lane in Almost Famous would of been like 13 in real life.
