Brian Fallon - Painkillers

General discussion, shows, and everything else.

Comes out today. I really enjoy all of the tracks they put out so far, but a lot of reviews are saying its as lack luster as the last Gaslight album. I feel bad for him!

Its like a lot of music journalists say "You're too hooked on nostalgia, you need to branch out," so he does, and they say it sucks. But then he returns to form on his new stuff and they say that it's a tired form. I dunno, I like all of the nostalgia of TGA.

I honestly don't keep track of a lot of newer music. TGA/Fallon in general is one of the few things I always follow. His solo is awesome, and has made my shitty week a little bit better.

But yeah, the journalists love to pick him apart.

Gave it a listen on a long drive yesterday and enjoyed it quite a bit. I could definitely hear critics scoffing in the distance when he started talkin' bout a picture show 30 seconds in, but whatever. I've dug everything he's done so far and this is no different. I'd absolutely be down with more of my favorite songwriters getting the Butch Walker treatment.

Need to get this. The songs I've heard so far -- A Wonderful Life, Smoke and Nobody Wins -- were all great. I mean, listen to any project dude has been in. Solo, Gaslight, Horrible Crowes, Cincinnati Rail Tie, dude just has a real knack for songwriting.

Will report back when I've heard the whole thing.

Prefer the Molly and The Zombies versions of the songs he re-recorded on the album. I also feel like it's different enough from TGA that it isn't just a rehash like critics seem to be saying. Gonna be good sunny day driving music.

Really bummed I missed out on the pre-order to get the bonus 7", but the prices for the physical copies are way excessive.

I just cant get into it. I'm 100% guilty of wanting 59 sound, senor and the queen, American slang era. Never been a fan of the frontman goes solo thing anyway.

Listened probably 4-5 times now, and I love this album. 'Rosemary' is such a killer fucking song.

Haven't heard much beyond the first single, but I'm excited to see him in KCMO next week. From what I understand it's pretty much his songs with the rest of Gaslight as his backing band, which definitely bodes well.

here's my thing with brian fallon and gaslight anthem. I think fallon is a great songwriter, in fact, so much that I think he has a truly great, career-defining album festering inside of himself, his 'born to run' so to speak. I've been waiting for it to come out but if it's going to happen, dude needs to take a couple of years, do some serious soul searching and dump everything he has into it. leave it all on the table, risk mental breakdown and come out triumphant. of course I could be wrong and he'll just continue to release good records, but I'm really hoping for the album that will solidify his place among the truly great songwriters.

Just posting because I have a mutual friend named Tommy Gunn and Brian inadvertently name dropped him in the chorus of Nobody Wins. We all call him "Little Tommy Gunn" now.
