MLB - RIP Roy Halladay and Daniel Flores

General discussion, shows, and everything else.

the two exemplary organizations for analytics have just won titles, back to back. tigers are out here hiring ron gardenhire and his entire 2009 staff + a few organizational holdovers. good baseball may never return to detroit.

analytics are no longer "the future," they're the full-blown present. teams that aren't up on this are fucked. ausmus even said in his exit interview that the organization is years behind in their analytical department. lord give me strength.

The move is probably to hire a full on analytics guy as manager and then a more old school guy as his bench coach to keep him in the confines of the game on the field.

It's the same thing the best front offices have done. Progressive and traditional minds working together.

Jesus, Ron Gardenhire as a new hire is absolutely brutal.

If it's cheap and means he puts a third astro in the HoF, I'd like him back next year and a bench/hitting coach the year after.

I was thinking about this last night. In terms of prime years he should go in as a Met but a lot of Mets fans have this vendetta against him, and he doesn't seem to like the Mets either. Houston probably makes as much sense as any of his other teams.

Dude. Imagine the team the Tigers fielded last year, that lost 100 games, but without JV, JD, Wilson, Upton AND with Gardenhire at the helm.

Don't get too jealous.

Yeah. I feel like the roles were usually reversed in the past, which makes sense in theory until you get traditional guys like Terry Collins ignoring the advice you're giving him.

They could feasibly break their own AL loss record from 2003.

Yup, that's the old problem, where the old school guy having the final say leads to them ignoring most of the advice they're given. See: Girardi as Torre's bench coach, leaving and winning manager of the year with a $15m payroll.

People are reporting Upton signed a five year deal with the Angels. But I can't see whether he's opting out and it's five years or if it's on top of what he's owed.

New Upton deal is 5/106. Can't imagine JD Martinez is too hyped about that AAV.

There's a good chance Otani isn't coming this winter. MLB is letting the Ham Fighters receive $20m under the old posting rules but won't let Otani negotiate a free agent contract, like he would have been able to under those rules, an instead is making him sign what a normal IFA would sign. The MLBPA isn't having that and reportedly won't sign off on any deal he signs.

Going through this whole process has made me realize just how hard it is to actually win a World Series. I always pictured it as this magical thing that just happens. So many things went right this year and yet it still wasn't enough. Makes it hard for me to envision any other Dodgers team ever being able to get over the hump.

Reading the countless posts in comment sections making fun of the Angels for signing another 100+ million dollar contract is so laughable.

Like uhhh WHAT ELSE ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO DO TO GET TROUT HELP?

Adding a 5th year for 17.5 to secure him on top of an already reasonable deal is A-OK with me. The average person must've not paid attention to how good Upton was last year.

Three years ago he had a tear that was checked out by multiple orthopedists who said he was fine. He's pitched over 500 innings since then.

He easily would have. Arrieta is going to get 25 or so, Darvish will get a little more. Tanaka would have sat somewhere between 25-28.

Yankees are getting Tanaka at ages 29-31 will be sitting at $22,3mil. Watch the Yankees sign Ichiro for like a year to help lure Otani in if he comes to the MLB. WATCH.

I think if you're an active player and you die in a plane you're flying you need to be Yankee. He's retired, so all bets are off.
