Bumping this thread because I finally caved and bought a solo ticket to see Jason Isbell at The Ryman on October 25th. It's the most I've ever paid for a concert and the first time ever going alone to one but my birthday is on the 13th so I just said screw it, and bought a ticket as a gift for myself.

I somehow stumbled upon him years ago when he released endless oklahoma sky, and have loved him ever since. Own everything by him. Only gets better and better. I usually suggest him to every I know trying to get into alt-county/folk.

First off, came to post John Moreland. Second, I came to post that in today's musical landscape, alt-country is 100% real country. Mainstream country is disgusting garbage that resembles nothing like the country I grew up on. Fuckin' blowhards with gelled hair and Express jeans.

Last, I miss the Black Gold Band a lot, but JM still kills it. Endless Oklahoma Sky gets regular play from me still. I miss the old days of Tulsa hardcore fests. I always loved playing them and seeing JM & The Black Gold Band on bills that did not even remotely fit them. All the "hardcore kids" still enjoyed the shit out of them, too.

I really liked Harlem River Blues and Nothing's Going to Change the Way You Feel About Me Now, but the two most recent ones are pretty boring so far.

Was bummed that I missed getting tickets for Sturgill Simpson in Toronto. Didn't expect it to sell out so fast. But they just announced a second show! Really excited. Probably the albums I've listened to the most in the past year.

Hated Super 8 for a long time. Now i love it, but it definitely doesn't fit. Its a nice reprieve from the weight of the other songs though.

it's the song i listen to least on the album (i tend to skip if if i have immediate access to a skip button), but gets stuck in my head the most.

i don't hate it, but i do think it's completely out of place.

Took me a while but now I love the song, but it would have fit better elsewhere on a seven inch or something.

My buddies just released a stunning alt-country album. Please take a listen!

Image

https://noriver.bandcamp.com/

The album was recorded by the band themselves and mixed by Portland recording great Pat Kearns (whose credits include the Exploding Hearts, Clorox Girls and the Observers, among others). The result is a fascinating album that pairs alt-country and folk rock (think the Band) with a healthy dose of punk grit.

glossary's subsequent releases seem to stray further from country, and into indie rock territory. unless they've put something out within the past year or so, i dunno, i haven't paid attention in a while. i do really like them, though.

Haven't listened to anything past How We Handle Our Midnights honestly but I'm sure they are still a great band whatever they sound like now. I know their pedal steel player was in Lucero for awhile.

Saw Sturgill last night at a sold out fucking show at the TLA in Philly.
Good for him. Last time I saw him was last year at The Ardmore Music Hall with probably 125 people.
Can't wait for him to get back in the studio. He's my absolute favorite right now.

Other shit that I think fucking slays:

This guys voice is incredible. I mean I don't have a way to explain how it makes me feel.

His story is amazing too. "The two musicians Jill Jonson and Magnus Carlson from Sweden met him on the street after a tip from a hot dog salesman. They were very taken by his lyrics and flair for singing." I believe the above video is of this happening, sitting against a freeway ramp in Nashville.

They got homeboy off the street, got him some new clothes and they hooked him up with some new fake teeth and he's been playing sold out shows across Scandanavia. I first heard about him because he played a set on our local NPR, I had to park my car and listen to the whole thing.
