Alt-Country=Real Country.

General discussion, shows, and everything else.

I play a shit ton of Son Volt at work and a customer recommended this band to me last week after talking Son Volt/Jay Farrar for a little bit. Just listening to them now for the first time.

Seems to be Indie rock influenced by Americana/country more than anything but I like the couple songs I've listened to. Anyone know anything about these dudes?

Can't go wrong with Steve Earle.

For sure, really glad you like it. I'm trying to spread the word, literally everyone I show is an instant fan. His voice is super close to Hank Sr. It's funny because he spends a big chunk of time in Sweden where he's like a legit star, but stateside he's just catching on in popularity.

He and Sturgil Simpson to me are kind of the vanguard of a really exciting wave of Alt country singers who actually have voices that sound like golden age Country voices. I hope more people like that pop out of the woodwork.

Here's a cool interview he did with Emylou Harris. They covered my favorite Graham Parsons song, tight. Pleased but not surprised to learn Buddy Miller is an old friend of this guy's.

Great voice, I like this version a lot, thanks!

Here's Townes Van Zandt doing the original in case you haven't seen it. Worth watching all the way through, pretty moving.

Sturgill Simpson is legit. This fucking cover is mind blowing:

Plus, he is a bad ass:

Also, for the record, I wish the term alt-country would go away and people would just start refer to
what is good in country simply as country. Let's give a different name to all the bubble gum crap
that is called country.

i have the weirdest boner right now. As far as the Blue Lamp in Sacramento for that Drag The River tour that venue can attract a weird crowd, it normally has pretty shitty bands play, but I've seen it pretty much packed out for a couple .357 String Band shows and a couple other bluegrassy ones. Seems like they could do a bigger show in SF probably, but Sac has a surprisingly strong country/bluegrass scene. Devil Makes Three sold out a much much bigger venue there before I think they really blew up.

I think at this point in my life I can confidently say that this is my favorite song of all time. Period.

Hearing Catchin' an all night station somewhere in Lousiana, it sounds like 1963, but for now it sounds like heaven makes me want to get in my car and drive forever.

"Traveller" has been on constant repeat for me over the last month and a half. That album pretty much front to back is just solid good.

Also really looking forward to Sturgill Simpsons new album this year.

And congrats to Isbell winning a couple Grammys as well.

I read an article the other day where Sturgill Simpson said that the new album was already done but he wanted to take at least a 6 month break before releasing it and touring again. I understand where he's coming from but I want to hear some new music from him so bad!!
