General discussion, shows, and everything else.

Pretty much everyone with some common sense is able to save that much until they get a mortgage, so it's not really that crazy. I'm proud though that I was able to save about 12.000 the last year. Yay for living in a house that my gf's parents own.
Travelling is gonna suck up so much of that next year :(.

I'd have some common sense too if I didn't have to pay anything for college

Re-read my post and I worded it wrong. I meant to say: everyone with some common sense in Belgium.
My bad.

*obviously it depends on the country

College tuition is about 600 max, books between 100 and 500 and a private dorm room about 3500 for a schoolyear. 90% of the time the parents pay from their savings.
The system and peer pressure here definitely make you save, but obviously it takes some effort as well. f.e. A 6-digit wage is nearly impossible and everything is pretty damn expensive so most people tend to be prepared by having some money saved up. Belgians hate risks.

Edit: a schoolyear in Belgium costs about 40.000 euro. 95% is paid with our taxes, so we do pay for it eventually.

Several grand in savings and several grand in my 401k.

I started getting very serious about saving and investing a little over a year ago and its nice having a nest egg to fall back on just in case. Im always terrified that im not saving enough and I think thats probably a good attitude to have.

Invest in a ROTH IRA, you won't regret it, that is unless the U.S market takes a huge dump.

$3k in savings (too low right now) and $5k in checking. I have quite a bit in my 401k, and recently sold one income property to buy two more. One of them has been financial nightmare in the short term, but is a solid long term investment. Those aren't readily available cash, but I have a lot of equity in them.

If I convert to dollars, roughly c. $37,000 in the bank.
Another $3000 in my current account.
Nay bad for someone of my age, I'll never pay all my student loan back either, only paying them $60 /month. If I stopped buying bonzer hardcore records I'd have more cash but c'est la vie innit. London rent is also a major drain.

Let's not kid ourselves, you got some inheritance and feel the need to shove that down people's throats and brag about how much you're worth. That's not money that you've earned yourself and unless you provide any proof to shoot down my accusation, you're 100% full of shit and a shift manager at McDonald's.

Thread for dads.

Took my graduation money from high school and threw that into an IRA that I've just continued to let roll over. I've been contributing 10% of my paycheck to a 401k since I was 20 and the company that I worked for matched .50 cents on the dollar. They also gave me another share of private/preferred stock roughly every paycheck that has consistently done really well.

I quit when I came to Central America for an internship, and spent a great majority of my liquid savings on rent, exploring the rain forests, and strip clubs. I don't have jack in my savings now; about a month's worth for bills if something falls through with the two jobs that I have lined up when I get stateside again.

There are jobs that require "showy" stuff to lead clients to believe you work for a successful organization. It's all about presentation.

i wanted a nice car since I spend alot of time in it, got an suv only cause I have a large dog . I work sales though so a decent auto is required.

All in all though, buying a depreciating non cash generating asset and financing it through debt is probably one of the worst financial decisions anyone can make...

I take 20% out of every photography job and put that back for tax purposes, which goes into a separate savings. Then I take like 200/400 from the same job and just set it back. I have also been pulling $100.00 out of each "day job" paycheck to put back from my day job. I am suddenly into hoarding money and I was never like this before. This is something that I have only begun doing, regarding putting photography/day job money back for savings, for around three or four months. The tax part I have always done since we started the business, though.

About $250 but thats after putting a huge downpayment on a home, having a mortgage, paying a car loan, school loans, and a 2 year old child that requires a babysitter and other maintenance. I probably have about $300 to spend on myself per month if I'm lucky. Sucks being house poor but I don't know too many other 29 year olds who are in my circumstances so I guess I can't really complain.

Few questions:
There's people here with 5000+ in a checkings account. Why don't you move that to your savings account, and keep 500 on your checkings for daily use? Does it cost money to have a savings account? Do you get an intrest rate on the money on your savings? How much?
How easy is it to transfer money between your savings and checkings and the other way around?

If you have US Bank like I do it only takes like two clicks to transfer money from your savings to your banking to your credit line, etc.

I really don't want any tax season surprises, haha.

Really, though, I never used to feel secure if something unexpected were to pop up like car issues, for example. And, while I wouldn't want to dump the money into it, at least I know there's a safety net that keeps us from panicking/scrambling for that type of shit in case something happens. Growing up is weird.

The interest rates on personal savings accounts are so low right now, that with a relatively small amount of money (0-10,000 dollars) it doesn't really matter if you keep it in checking or savings.
