The show has become too aware of itself.

I am honestly just glad to have new Curb. I don't think they would've done this season if they weren't going to do a good job, it'll pick up.

The thing is, most online reviews I've read of the two episodes have been positive. I was kind of thinking I was an outlier here, but looking at this thread it looks like we all kind of feeling the same way about it...

This. I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but a lot of these shows coming back from the dead (MST3K, Arrested Development) fell victim to this: they try to come out swinging in the first chunk of the new season and appease everybody with fan service and nods to old source material but people don't really like that. It's almost like the show is talking down to you like you're a kid or something.

Give the show a handful of episodes to settle in. Once they get back into a working groove of how the show should flow, it'll be prototypical Curb again.

I think it’s more that nostalgia gives people an inflated sense of how awesome the shows they loved were, and between that and growing older and having your tastes change somewhat, nothing is going to live up to those expectations. Case in point is Arrested Development. The first 3 seasons were full of running jokes and in gags, season 4 would have been off without throwing back to that. What hurt Arrested Development more than anything was the structure of focusing on one Bluth per episode. I guarentee if it was the same structure as the fox seasons hardly anyone would have complained.

Yeah, I don't really think it's my evolving tastes, because I still watch the old CYE episodes regularly and find them incredibly funny. You can tell the budget is bigger now, too. The epic helicopter pan in shot at the beginning of the first episode put a bad taste in my mouth from the get go.

I have yet to watch an episode, but the clips I've seen have made me cringe. It's a cartoonish caricature of the original show. Larry used to piss off his friends, now he pisses off the Ayatollah and has to walk around in a kooky disguise? Okay. The nicer production value isn't helping the feel of the show either.

I don't think these criticisms are that nit-picky. Also, don't even try and tell me the "pretty good" moment in the the season premier didn't feel forced.

So strange. As the production value and everything else that goes into the show have increased dramatically, the writing has gone into the shitter. Dialogue just seems lazy.

Probably an unpopular opinion but show should have ended with the blacks moving in permanently after Larry falling in love. Ending was hilarious and a perfect season.

This season feels off.

The first four episodes leaked and are available on stream sites btw and I think it gets better once the fatwa thing is sort of dealt with and he stops wearing the disguise.

Two nights ago I was watching some old episodes at work. I quit safari and left for the night and woke up to this text.

"thanks for leaving your Curb your Enthusiasm youtube vid up on the mac laptop. Just opened the laptop to look something up and the it started playing "GET YOUR LAZY ASS DICK OUTTA BED-" full volume and all the old people in the auditorium turned around like :O lmao"

Technically the show is 98% ad-lib. There’s really no writing, but the situations are really becoming a stretch.

This episode was forgettable too. The bit with the judge and the cough drop was funny, tho.

I've only seen the 1st episode and I'm pretty bummed to read that it's not getting any better. I think maybe there was a lot of hype to live up to this time and they are dropping the ball on the improv. Reaaaaally hoping they turn it around. Ep. 1 really seemed to have no tact although I enjoyed it overall.

I thought it was the strongest episode of the season so far. Still not great, but an improvement over Leon distracting everyone in the hotel lobby by trying to open the pickle jar.

Sunday's episode was great. Salman Rushdie was hilarious. The court scene was great.

I thought the restaurant manager was the weakest part of the episode. I was well on my way to hating another episode until Rushdie explained using the fatwa to get out of picking up people from the air port. Also L-Vid.
