That Mondo Black Friday sale was a shit show. Literally the only thing I wanted (Moss - Totoro) sold out in 2 seconds.

I put a bunch of stuff in my cart, saw my total of $600, thought for a second about what to remove and then they were all gone. Oh well!

Had a few things in my cart and then the site decided to crap out on me and I lost them all.

If any one wants to purchase my Horkey gilded age print I'm selling it for cost and will even throw in a brand new Osprey shirt.

I just ordered a print for the first time. I'm new at this and wondering what my framing options are. I called a local place and they quoted me $140 to frame it or $65 just to give me the frame and materials. They said a certain quality of shit was needed to preserve the value of the print because it's signed and numbered. Is that really necessary? It's just a print of a painting by a tattoo artist, nothing I'm gonna sell down the road for a big profit. I was thinking of just using the website posted on the last page.

You have several options for framing. The cheap route is to get a ready-made. The glass will just be clear glass and the matte and backing material won't be acid free. This could cause discoloration in the future, especially if any direct sunlight hits it.

The medium route is to get a ready-made frame, but have them cut an acid free matte, backing, and UV glass. This will protect your print for the long term.

The expensive route is to go full custom. Custom frame, matte, backing, and glass. You can even splurge on museum glass which has all the properties of UV glass but no glare.

Some go DIY, buying and cutting the materials themselves.

Thanks for the info. Is the cheap option something I could probably get at Michael's or hobby lobby? Can I assume the $165 price they told me is for the expensive option #3?

Yes, both of those places should have ready-made frames. They are usually in the $20-80 range, depending on size and quality.

$165 for a custom job sounds about right for a simple 16x20 with UV glass and nice matte or two. Not sure how big your print is though.

Picked up the Planet Hulk and Amazing Spider-man prints Mondo dropped today. Probably won't frame them for at least a few years, but they'll make nice additions to the comic book room my wife said I could build.

i've been just sitting on my collection since starting in 2008.

was always a little short on money, or about to move, or couldn't decide how i wanted to frame them.

finally made some decisions this week, and i ordered just over $2k in frames, mats & mounting boards to frame most of them. now just have to spend the rest of 2016 getting a piece of glass a day from hobby lobby…

Quick question: is there a good Popsike-like site to get an idea of current prices for prints? I've got some old and fairly rare Pushead and Horkey prints that I'm looking to sell and I need a ballpark for what to ask/start them at.

Thanks.

It's always a bummer when a good gallery has to close. Cool show, I love Esao and always enjoy seeing his work up close.

during me last move I had to have a compadre hold onto a poster tube for me, containing Mondo prints of The Prowler, The New York Ripper & Tombs of the Blind Dead. I forgot about em altogether, probably cos I couldn't be fucked paying to frame em, and he's since become a picture framer and'll do em on the house :smt033

Ha yeah sorry I was thinking I was the EV board. Honestly there were a lot of people unhappy with the print so I imagine you'll be able to find them for close to cost soon. I'm waiting in hopes of scoring the MMM variant of the even cooler vacvvm variant.

Do any of you put prints on the wall? If so, what tape do you use so that it's easy to remove and doesn't damage the print?

I went to his gallery show in Minneapolis a few years ago (last year maybe?), and it was cool to see his work in person, but it was literally 5-6 prints in 8,489,958 variations.

The process was cool considering he made them all at the studio during a marathon print making session, but it was a lot of the same.

I'm new to this, but what are the advantages of custom frames that would justify their higher price if you can get a stock frame for your print size? Are there sometimes issues with borders?

oh man that particular print is just such a weird size that it had to be custom. I just go to Aaron Brother's and use their 1,000,000% coupons that they always have. Still somewhat expensive though.

Advantages are mainly just the choice of a cool frame and a higher quality glass that will prolong the life of your print. I probably only do 1-2 custom jobs a year because of the outrageous prices.

What do you buy when you don't get it custom? I was looking around on Amazon and you can get a lot of frames for around $30. Don't know if those are good and if there are even better deals. They use either regular or plexi glass. Which one is better and what's the difference in the life of the print? I figured prints would last decades even if left lying around.

Off-the-shelf frames typically don't have UV glass, or acid-free materials. Without UV glass, your expensive print could yellow over time if exposed to sunlight. Mattes and backing that aren't acid-free could leach into the paper over time as well, discoloring the artwork.

If you're framing a $20 poster, it doesn't really matter. If you're framing something limited and you plan to keep it on the wall for a long time, splurge for UV glass and acid free materials. You can always find a cheap frame that will work, then upgrade the glass and matte/backing at a local shop.
