My girl's mom brought me this soy "beef" from Japan when she visited us, and I fried it up with some spinach and garlic. So fucking good

Canada's largest meat producer (Maple Leaf Foods) bought Field Roast today. That sucks.

So lets see...Amy's and Tofurky are still privately held. Any other bigger companies?

I hope Vegan Haven stops selling their products now.

Good as hell. Still have a bunch leftover in the freezer. It was very similar to baking actually.

Yeah. They were fairly easy to make, there's just a lot of ingredients. Basically you sweat out the onions and some of the ingredients, combine, blend, make a dough, then simmer in a broth. Takes a lot of kneading too.

yeah that part was really easy. just some ingredients on a sauce pan. you can easily wait until everything else is done to do the sauce.

"One thing is for certain," Field Roast CEO David Lee said in a statment. "We are as committed as ever to the vegan movement, keeping our products vegan, and creating a more beautiful and peaceful world to live in."

One thing I learned from this is that the same company also bought Lightlife earlier this year for $140 million. Field Roast was purchased for $120 Mil.

Gardein is owned by Pinnacle Foods who own several other name brand products like Hungry Man, Tim's Cascade, Earth Balance, and Vlasic to name a few.

Tyson owns a piece of Beyond Meat.

Most of the comments I've read have blasted Field Roast, and the CEO''s lame answers on Twitter today didn't help. The people that don't care keep bringing up the distribution aspect and getting more people to go vegan if they have more options. I don't disagree with that, but it's literally blood money, which I can't support.

What about eating at places like Taco Bell? I eat vegan there but know that the majority of their business is from meat and cheese

Yeah, I see your point. The same could be said for a company like Ben and Jerry's making vegan ice cream. Does your dollar go towards furthering the reach and r&d of more vegan food, or does it go to the dairy industry?

But something about this particular sale just seems wrong, maybe more because they are local and I've been to the factory, met the employees. If would be an easier pill to swallow if they came out and said all money spent on Field Roast would stay within the Field Roast brand. I dunno. I'm just bummed.

so the vegan brands we support arent really about helping animals/share the same beliefs vegans do. i guess them getting bought out is no different to the brands you posted because i had no idea any of those companies were owned by meat industry giants.

ill be supporting tofurky at least

also amys isnt solely vegan, dont they have meat products as well

Amy's is all meat free but they still do use dairy products in some of their stuff.

I think this all goes back to the "no ethical consumption under capitalism" argument, trying to maintain a sense of moral purity is kicking water uphill. I understand the frustration of people commenting on the buyout but it is a little ironic that the smart phones they are using are produced from third world slave labor, same with the vehicles we drive, etc.

Maple Leaf is just an awful company. There are meat producing companies that at least make an effort to not look totally cruel and unethical and Maple Leaf is NOT one of them. I used to work next to one of their plants (it was truly awful hearing the animals crying being brought in on super packed trucks.. and the smell, my fucking god, the smell...) and I'll never forget that shit. I wouldn't support one of their products if I was starving to death. So, see ya Field Roast.

The way that I TRY to approach it is simply - when I am home, I make an extremely conscious effort to buy from companies that I am comfortable with and know aren't owned by some bull shit parent company I hate.

But, when I'm not home, I try to the extent I can. If I'm somewhere with limited options, taco bell and ben and jerry's is my best bet and can't nit pick when there is nothing else. Especially when eating at vegan spots away from home where who knows what companies they use.

Seattle Cookie Counter announced they will cease using Field Roast products for their morning brunch. I doubt they use a lot of it, but interesting to see one business making that decision. When I asked Vegan Haven, which is the veg grocery store here, they said they were supportive of the decision as it will help spread more vegan food to Canada. It was an interesting response because the store supports Pigs Peace Sanctuary, a local rescue of farm animals.
